Updated Group Packlist:

Pack-List-3-March-2016

Please update with your items that you can share or that you need.

*1/24/16 Update*

In theory, people liked the Whitney/Death Valley idea, but it seems most people are leaning to Shasta. So, SHASTA WINS. We’ll do Whitney next time.

If we do Shasta, the schedule roughly looks like the following:

  1. Wed – March 16th – Fly out west on Wednesday sometime, meetup, get rental car and stay. Drink Beer.
  2. Thurs – Drive to mt shasta and stay somewhere (5 hour drive). If someone flies in Thursday Morning instead of Wednesday we should have time to pick them up.
  3. Fri – Get to basecamp. early AM start needed Friday.
  4. Sat – Summit and return to car, stay up north and celebrate. Summit day is expected to be a 12-14 hours of hiking, and a 3-6AM start from basecamp is needed.
  5. Sun – drive to airport city and stay.
  6. Mon – fly out (or maybe sunday evening/night).
  7. I updated the calendar to reflect the dates above.

Everybody needs Wednesday to Monday Ideally, and Thursday to Monday off at a bare minimum. If we get held up on the mountain you wouldn’t want to miss a Sunday flight.

I’m only OK with Shasta if everyone has the RIGHT gear, meaning proper crampons and compatible boots, good winter gear, a properly rated sleeping bag etc. This is a full on glacial climb in March. There have been whiteout blizzard conditions and -30F windchill in March, so we’d need to be prepared. More likely, our temperatures are expected to be -5 lows (summit) to 50 degrees highs (base) or so, but I can’t find good concrete temperature data at the summit so I don’t know. We also need to see if we need to rope up and what the avalanche situation is.

Everybody check out the routes and conditions for a Shasta climb and see which one seems best for March. Check out:

Also, we should plan a backup mountain in case the weather doesn’t cooperate on Shasta, since the plane tickets are non-refundable. Finally, I’d like to get tickets this week, since some are already sold out, and we want as much flexibility in flight times as possible.

Sacramento and Reno look like the closest main airports to Shasta that have Southwest flights available. Both are about 3 hours from the mountain. Surprisingly, Reno is 3.5 hours from Shasta and about 4.5 hours from Whitney, so if weather on Shasta didn’t cooperate we could head south and do White Mountain or Mt Whitney anyway as a backup plan. I think it’s best if we all fly in to the same airport so we can share rental car, transportation etc.

Download and fill out the Pack-List-3 and email it back to me. I’ll keep a master updated. That way people can say what they have available for others, or that they need from others. No need in bringing 5 water filters etc, but we also don’t want to be stuck with none. If I forgot something important PLEASE add it to the bottom of the list.

Let me know what you guys think.

*1/23/16 Update*

A new idea was presented for location that seems to deserve merit, and goes as follows:

  1. Fly into Las Vegas
  2. Drive to Lone Pine and spend the night.
  3. Climb Mt Whitney
  4. Drive to Death Valley and view/camp/hike/stay/bike
    1. Possibly rent Jeep or 4×4 in death valley for additional fun if we have time/motivation.
    2. Jeep rental in death valley
  5. Fly Home.

What’s interesting is that if we did this, we would hit the lower 48’s highest AND lowest points in the same week. Pretty stellar. Just one possible idea. Also, not out of the way, Death Valley is exactly on the way from Las Vegas to Lone Pine, which is where the idea came from I believe.

  2. Mt Whitney, Votes: Tim
  3. Mt St Helens, Votes:
  4. Mt Hood, Votes:
  5. Mt Ranier, Votes:
    • I really want to do this mountain one day, but I think it’s above our level at this point. Need to be roped up with frequent ice bridges and crevasses. It’s also a little early in the season for this mountain and temperatures are low. Thoughts? Can we do it?
  6. Zion or Arches National Park Utah, Votes:
    • Not a mountain, but alot of great hiking and views. just a random idea and I’ve always wanted to go there.
  7. 2nd try on Gannet Peak? We would all need a week. Votes:

Looking forward to it! Everybody start jogging, the air is thin up there. Also, Everybody needs to understand HAPE and HACE if we go above 10,000 ft.

  1. Hey Guys, Hate to say it…I’m out. I’m getting Married this March! Got a honeymoon, and the ever persistent military weekend. it pretty much kills the month of March for me. BTW, no joke about the altitude. Just finished flying in the Rockies for a week, I was good till 12,000+. After an hour I started to sound funny (even with a KY accent). I was starting to get hypoxia, and that was after being at 7,000 ft for several days. It comes quick. Also, I learned that 1 beer = 2 beers above 8,000! Take care, I want to see some good pics!

    1. Congratulations Terry! Thanks for letting us know and sorry to hear you’re out, but at least its for a good cause! I might go on two climbs this year, but at a minimum i’ll be doing another one next year, so if you’re interested I hope you can make it next time! We need to see you two soon.

  2. Mt Shasta looks legit.. that’s my vote- good climb, short drive from Reading, CA

The runner up would be Mt. Rainier, which, in my opinion, would require a guide service.

Not much interested in Mt. Whitney.. it’s a beautiful climb in the summer. The approach road would be amazingly dangerous in wither which would be cool.. but speaking of the drive- it takes forever to get to Lone Pine from pretty much anywhere.

    1. Great points Frank (Stanley). I also notice you commented while you were logged in to update the calendar, so your new name is now Calendar User. Frank/Stanley/Calendar User and I talked about Shasta, and I was initially worried about the early season timing and cold temperatures, but as long as everyone has good winter gear we should be OK. I agree Ranier would need a guide service, which isn’t necessarily out of the question IMO. If we did Shasta we could Ski down…but that’s more weight to haul up, and not everyone has skiis. -Tim
